Industri Klor-Alkali: Katup untuk Korosi Klorin Basah

You have big corrosion problems in the Chlor-Alkali Industry when you work with wet chlorine. Titanium alloys give strong protection from chemical damage. Ceramic-lined and fully lined valves help keep your system safe and working well. At Katup JH, we specialize in high-grade alloy valves specifically engineered for the most aggressive chemical environments.

You need to pick the right valve material and check it often. This way, you lower risk and make the plant safer.

  • Titanium alloys stop wet chlorine from causing corrosion (by forming a stable oxide film).
  • Ceramic-lined and fully lined valves last longer than standard metals.

Wet Chlorine Corrosion Challenges

Corrosion Mechanisms

Wet chlorine causes big corrosion problems in the Chlor-Alkali Industry. When wet chlorine mixes with water (even trace amounts >50 ppm), it makes strong acids (Hydrochloric and Hypochlorous Acid). These acids attack metal parts in valves and pipes. The acids break down the metal fast. You can see small holes and cracks form (Pitting Corrosion). These weak spots can get bigger and start leaks.

The acids also change how valve parts look and work. This makes the valves less useful. It is important to know how these reactions happen. Then you can pick the best valve materials and keep your system safe.

Tip: Always check how much moisture is in your chlorine. Less moisture means less acid and less corrosion. However, Titanium requires some water to maintain its passivity in chlorine; otherwise, it can ignite in dry chlorine.

Pengaruh pada Kinerja Katup

Wet chlorine corrosion changes how valves work and how long they last. The table below shows the main problems:

Impact TypeKeterangan
Material DegradationWet chlorine makes valve materials (like Carbon Steel) break down fast.
Leak PotentialThere is a bigger chance for leaks (Fugitive Emissions) and valve failures.
Acidic Chemical FormationStrong acids form when moisture is present, causing more corrosion.
Pertimbangan DesainYou must choose valve materials and designs that can handle tough conditions.

You might see leaks and lower pressure in your system. Valve parts can rust and change shape. This makes it hard for valves to close tightly. Leaks and system failures can be dangerous.

If a valve fails with wet chlorine, it can let out toxic gas. This can harm the environment. You need to act fast to stop these risks. Checking valves often and picking good materials helps keep your plant safe.

Valve Materials for Chlor-Alkali Industry

Picking the right valve material is very important. It helps keep your plant safe and working well. Wet chlorine is tough on regular metals. It can break them down fast. You should learn what each material can and cannot do before you choose.

Titanium and Nickel Alloys

Titanium alloys (Grade 2, Grade 7) are a great choice for wet chlorine. They have strong corrosion resistance. A special oxide film forms on titanium. This film protects the metal. If the film gets damaged, it fixes itself (Self-healing). This keeps the protection going for a long time. Titanium can handle chlorine even when it is hot or strong.

MilikKeterangan
Ketahanan KorosiTitanium typically corrodes at a rate of less than 0.0025mm per year in wet chlorine.
Protective Oxide FilmThe oxide film on titanium heals itself after small damage in the presence of moisture.

You can trust titanium alloys with palladium (Grade 7) for many uses. They work in both oxidizing and reducing conditions. Titanium protects as well as tantalum but is often more cost-effective.

Nickel alloys like Hastelloy C-276 and Inconel are also strong. They resist many chemicals, including wet chlorine. Hastelloy C-276 fights pitting, crevice corrosion, and cracking. These alloys work in both oxidizing and reducing media. But they cost more for big projects. Hastelloy C-276 is better than titanium for reducing acids.

Note: Titanium alloys give you good corrosion resistance and save money for most wet chlorine jobs. Nickel alloys work well but cost more.

Ceramic and Lined Valves

Ceramic-lined valves protect very well in the Chlor-Alkali Industry. Ceramics like silicon nitride and zirconia are strong and do not react with chemicals (Inert). You get many benefits:

  • Great wear and corrosion resistance
  • Better sealing (Hard-on-Hard)
  • Longer life
  • Less maintenance
  • Can handle heat and sudden temperature changes

Ceramic-lined valves work better than metals and polymers in tough wet chlorine areas. Use them when you need strong valves and less downtime.

Katup Bola Kriogenik

Fully lined valves, especially lined ball valves, keep metal away from chlorine. This design gives strong corrosion resistance. Pick fully lined valves instead of partly lined ones. Partly lined valves do not protect as well. Lined ball valves are best for tough chemical jobs, including wet chlorine.

Tip: Use fully lined (PFA) or ceramic-lined valves in the most corrosive spots to keep your plant safe and reliable.

Fluoropolymer Limitations

Fluoropolymer-lined valves like PTFE or PFA are common because they do not react with chemicals. But they have limits in wet chlorine service:

  • PTFE is weak (permeable) and can change shape under high pressure and heat (Cold Flow).
  • PTFE and PFA can let small chlorine molecules pass through (Permeation). This can hurt the metal inside (substrate corrosion).
  • PTFE is soft and can wear out fast (Abrasion).

PFA is stronger and resists chlorine better than PTFE (less permeable). But both have limits. You need to check for liner problems, especially with high pressure or heat.

Warning: Chlorine can sneak through fluoropolymer liners and cause hidden damage to the metal valve body. Always check lined valves often. Think about other choices for the hardest Chlor-Alkali Industry jobs.

Valve Types and Designs

Katup Diafragma

Diaphragm valves are used a lot with wet chlorine. They are good because they stop leaks very well. These valves do not have a stuffing box (packless), so nothing leaks out. Only the valve body lining and diaphragm touch the chlorine. This keeps the metal parts safe from damage.

FiturKeterangan
KeuntunganNo stuffing box, absolutely zero leakage; smooth flow path, not prone to clogging.
Media ContactOnly the valve body lining and diaphragm come into contact with the media.
AplikasiSuitable for highly hazardous, highly toxic, and high-purity media, slurries, and viscous fluids.

Ball, Plug, and Butterfly Valves

Ball, plug, and katup kupu-kupu are also used with wet chlorine. Each one has its own good points. Ball valves are easy to use and control flow well. Plug valves with bellows seals help stop leaks. Lined butterfly valves can handle wet chlorine gas and do not rust easily.

Jenis KatupApplication in Wet Chlorine Service
Lined Butterfly ValveCommonly used for wet chlorine gas (Large diameters).
Ball Valve (Titanium/Lined)Effective for controlling flow and tight shutoff.
Bellows Sealed Globe ValvePrevents stem leakage in toxic gas service.

Design Features for Corrosion Resistance

You need to look at special design features to keep valves safe in chlorine. Use seamless Hastelloy C-276 for bellows to stop corrosion. Fully welded bodies do not have cracks where chlorine can hide. This helps prevent damage. Do not use 316L stainless steel because it gets pits in wet chlorine.

  • Material selection: Seamless Hastelloy C-276 for bellows.
  • Structural integrity: Fully welded bodies.
  • Avoid 316L stainless steel (Pitting).
  • Gasket material: PTFE-clad Hastelloy C-276.
  • Crevice-free design.

Pemilihan dan Pemeliharaan

Kriteria Seleksi Utama

When you pick valves for wet chlorine, think about important things. The right valve keeps your plant safe and working well. Use the table below to help you choose:

KriteriaKeterangan
Pemilihan MaterialPick materials that fight corrosion, like titanium, nickel alloys, or full PFA lining.
Kinerja PenyegelanChoose valves with strong seals, such as Fluororubber O-rings and V-shaped PTFE packing.
Fitur KeselamatanOne-piece ball-and-stem parts and safety devices (Locking handle) keep things safe.

Tip: Always check for safety features. Things like explosion-proof parts and pressure relief systems protect people and equipment.

Maintenance Strategies

Check chlorine valves often for rust and leaks. Regular checks help you find problems early. Take out rusty valves to clean and look at them more. Use a soaked wick (Ammonia test) to test for leaks safely. Only tighten packing nuts the way the maker says.

You should pick titanium alloys and ceramic-lined valves for wet chlorine. These valves fight corrosion and last a long time. They also help stop leaks from happening. If you check and fix your valves often, your system stays safe. Katup JH offers a full range of corrosion-resistant valves, backed by decades of manufacturing expertise.

Pertanyaan yang Sering Diajukan (FAQ)

What valve material works best for wet chlorine?

Titanium alloys (Grade 2) and ceramic-lined valves are good choices. These materials do not get damaged by wet chlorine. They last longer in tough conditions. Nickel alloys (Hastelloy C-276) also work but cost more money.

How often should you inspect chlorine valves?

Check chlorine valves once a month. Look for rust, leaks (white fumes with ammonia), or worn parts. Finding problems early stops bigger failures. This keeps your plant safe.

Can you use PTFE-lined valves for wet chlorine?

PTFE-lined valves give good protection, but chlorine can permeate through the liner and hurt the metal inside (body corrosion). You need to check these valves often for liner damage or use PFA which is less permeable.

Why do ceramic-lined valves last longer?

Ceramic-lined valves are inert and do not get damaged by chemicals or abrasion. They seal better and need less fixing. These valves work well with heat and quick temperature changes.
