API 6A PSL Levels Explained: PSL 1, PSL 2, PSL 3 and PSL 3G Differences

Choosing between PSL 1, PSL 2, PSL 3, and PSL 3G decides how much material control, traceability, examination, testing, and documentation your wellhead or Christmas-tree equipment has to carry. Specify too low and an under-controlled component may enter critical gas service. Specify a level the project never approved and you pay for records nobody asked for. API 6A product specification levels answer one question: what evidence must the manufacturer produce? They do not set pressure rating, temperature class, material class, or performance validation.

Who Actually Owns the PSL Decision on a Wellhead Package?

PSL selection reaches engineering, procurement, manufacturing surveillance, and final document review. It matters to EPC contractors preparing valve data sheets, operators replacing wellhead equipment, package builders integrating valves into a tree or manifold assembly, and inspectors defining hold or witness points.

The purchaser should establish the required PSL rather than asking bidders to infer one from a short service description such as “sour gas well.” Start from the project specification, equipment type, well conditions, fluid composition, pressure and temperature envelope, the governing API 6A edition, and any operator-specific additions.

  • Engineering: confirm whether the project specification names a PSL, and whether separate sour-service, low-temperature, or gas-testing requirements sit on top of it.
  • Procurement: compare quotations only after every bidder acknowledges the same PSL, edition, product type, material class, temperature class, and rated working pressure.
  • Quality/QA: translate the PSL into an inspection and test plan with named documents and stages, instead of accepting a one-line PSL statement.
  • Operations: check that replacement equipment matches the installed interfaces, ring grooves, and actuation, not merely the nominal size and working pressure.

Buyer rule: PSL is a product specification level. It is not the pressure rating, the temperature class, the material class, or the performance requirement level. Four separate fields, four separate confirmations.

What Actually Changes as You Move from PSL 1 to PSL 3G

API 6A applies a progression of product specification levels, with controls generally becoming more demanding as the level increases. The exact requirements depend on the equipment, material, manufacturing route, and applicable edition, so treat the table below as a comparison framework and verify each line against the specified edition and product tables before writing it into a purchase order.

Apply the selected PSL to each quoted equipment item rather than only to the package description. For example, review the available API 6A high-pressure plug valve, API 6A standard mud gate valve, ، و API 6A manual orifice plate throttle valve configurations, then specify the required PSL, PR, material class, temperature class, end connection, and test documentation for every line item.

Do not read this progression as permission to substitute levels. A higher designation can change production steps, examination, testing, documentation, and commercial scope, and an unapproved “upgrade” is still a deviation. State the required level explicitly on the purchase order line, not only in an attached specification.

Comparison of API 6A PSL 1, PSL 2, PSL 3 and PSL 3G equipment controls

Why “API 6A Valve, PSL 3” Is Still an Incomplete Purchase Description

A PSL on its own does not define a product. API 6A equipment selection also depends on product type, nominal size and bore, rated working pressure, temperature class, material class, service conditions, end and outlet connections, and performance requirements where applicable. Answer these before releasing an inquiry:

  1. Which API 6A edition, addenda, or project amendment governs the order?
  2. Is the item a gate valve, check valve, choke, flange, connector, wellhead component, or another API 6A product?
  3. What bore, nominal size, rated working pressure, temperature class, and material class are required?
  4. Does the fluid contain hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, chlorides, sand, water, condensate, or treatment chemicals, and at what levels?
  5. Which pressure-containing, pressure-controlling, and wetted parts need specified materials or traceability?
  6. Are ring-type joint ends involved, and are flange type, ring groove number, and ring material unambiguous?
  7. Is PSL 3G required, or is PSL 3 with liquid pressure testing sufficient under the approved specification?
  8. Is a performance requirement level specified separately from the PSL?

Connection details deserve particular attention, because nominal size alone never establishes compatibility. Buyers weighing gasket arrangements and flange terminology can work through the practical differences in spiral wound versus ring-type joint flange selection, then apply the connection requirements specific to API 6A equipment.

Working on a data sheet that still has blanks? Send JH Valve / Janhen Valve the service medium and fluid analysis, rated working pressure, temperature range, size and bore, material class and component materials, governing standard and edition, actuator or operator type, and any leakage or gas-test criteria. Janhen Valve can flag the fields that will otherwise turn into supplier assumptions, so technical clarifications are closed before you compare prices.

Why PSL 3G Changes the Test Conversation

Read PSL 3G as PSL 3 equipment carrying the additional gas-testing requirements associated with that designation. Gas can reveal leakage behaviour differently from a liquid test, which makes test medium, stabilization, measurement, acceptance criteria, and safety controls part of the purchase specification rather than shop-floor detail.

“Gas test required” on an RFQ line defines nothing. Ask the supplier to identify the governing API 6A clause or project procedure, test medium, pressure stages, hold periods, allowable leakage criteria, instrumentation and calibration status, the chart or data-recording format, and whether purchaser witnessing applies. Those values should come from the applicable standard and approved project documents, never from an improvised acceptance figure agreed verbally during testing.

PSL 3G is also not a performance validation designation. PSL addresses product specification controls; a performance requirement level concerns qualification or validation requirements under the applicable standard. Confirm both fields independently on the data sheet.

  • Specify PSL 3G deliberately: do not assume a PSL 3 quotation includes gas testing or its records.
  • Fix the test boundaries: identify body cavity, seats, closure direction, and any relevant ports or penetrations to be tested.
  • Define the intervention level: state before order placement whether the test is a document review, a witness point, or a hold point.
  • Name the records: certificate, pressure record or chart, instrument identification and calibration reference, and a signed acceptance statement in the final dossier.

Turning a “PSL 3 Compliant” Quote Line into Verifiable Records

A quotation line saying “PSL 3 compliant” is not a documentation schedule. Tie each critical requirement to a specific piece of objective evidence, and decide at which stage that evidence will be reviewed.

مورد نیازEvidence to request or reviewBuyer risk if left unclear
Base and trim materialsMaterial certificates, specified grades, heat identification, and traceability records back to the componentIncorrect alloy, or a component that cannot be traced to a heat
خواص مکانیکیApplicable test results and heat-treatment records, including charpy data where a low-temperature class appliesMaterial may not meet the stated class or temperature requirement
NDEProcedure references, personnel qualification basis, reports, examined locations, and acceptance criteriaMethod or coverage does not match what the PSL and project require
Pressure and gas testsApproved procedure, calibrated instrument records, test report, and signed acceptance statementTest scope cannot be reconstructed during final document review
Dimensions and interfacesApproved general arrangement drawing with flange, ring groove, bore, and face-to-face detailsSite mismatch despite a correct nominal description
Final releaseInspection release note and the agreed manufacturing record book indexMissing documents discovered only after dispatch is being coordinated

Where alloy identity is critical, state whether positive material identification is required, which parts it covers, and which technique is acceptable. The differences between XRF and OES alloy verification matter when you need to distinguish similar chemistries or verify light elements that one method may not measure adequately.

Surface NDE should be equally method-specific. Surface-breaking discontinuities in different materials call for different techniques, and this comparison of liquid penetrant versus magnetic particle inspection explains why PT and MT are not interchangeable on austenitic and ferromagnetic components.

The API 6A Data Sheet Fields That Make Three Quotes Comparable

A technically complete inquiry reduces qualifications, hidden exclusions, and post-order change orders. Copy the following fields into the RFQ and mark unknown items for engineering resolution rather than leaving each bidder to assume something different.

API 6A technical inquiry checklist

  • Equipment and valve type, quantity, bore, and nominal connection size
  • API 6A edition, addenda, purchaser specification number, and required PSL
  • Rated working pressure, operating pressure, design pressure, and test basis
  • Temperature class plus minimum and maximum operating temperatures
  • Material class, body and bonnet material, trim, stem, seat, and seal requirements
  • Produced fluid composition, gas fraction, H2S and CO2 data, solids content, and chemical exposure
  • End connection, flange type, ring groove number, hub, outlet, face-to-face, and interface dimensions
  • Manual, hydraulic, pneumatic, or electric operation; fail position; available utilities; and interface details
  • PSL 3G gas-test procedure, medium, acceptance basis, records, and witness status when required
  • Performance requirement level, if applicable, stated separately from the PSL
  • NDE methods, extent of examination, acceptance criteria, and reporting requirements
  • Material certificates, traceability, PMI, hardness, heat treatment, and any other specified records
  • Inspection and test plan, purchaser hold points, document language, and final dossier index
  • Commissioning items, seals, stem packing, and other spare parts to be quoted separately
  • Drawing review dates, inspection coordination notice, packing and preservation requirements, and destination documentation

On project-controlled orders, agree early how factory and site acceptance activities are divided. The distinction between factory and site acceptance testing prevents site interface checks from being treated as a substitute for manufacturing pressure or gas tests that should already be complete and documented.

Nine Assumptions That Make Two API 6A Bids Look Different

Most apparent price or scope gaps start as mismatched technical assumptions. Close these out before treating bids as commercially comparable:

  • PSL quoted without an edition: requirements can change between API editions, so the purchase documents must name the governing one.
  • PSL treated as a pressure class: rated working pressure has to be stated independently of the PSL.
  • PSL 3 assumed to include gas testing: call out PSL 3G explicitly when that designation is required.
  • PSL treated as a material selection: material class and individual component materials still need separate confirmation.
  • Missing fluid chemistry: “oil and gas service” does not define corrosive constituents, solids loading, or sour conditions.
  • Unspecified actuator interfaces: output torque or thrust, fail action, hydraulic supply pressure, electrical supply, and control interfaces all affect the delivered assembly.
  • Generic NDE wording: “100% NDE” is ambiguous until method, components, examination stage, acceptance criteria, and reporting are identified.
  • Late document requirements: requesting traceability or witness points after machining and heat treatment are finished may simply be impractical.
  • Silent substitutions: a supplier should state deviations openly rather than quietly offering a different PSL, material, test scope, or connection.

Plan for the rest of the life cycle too. Confirm preservation for transport and storage, installation orientation, clean-assembly requirements, operating limits, actuator maintenance intervals, seal compatibility with treatment chemicals, and recommended spare-part identification. Keep the approved drawing, test records, material documents, and serial or traceability references filed where maintenance and replacement inquiries can reach them years later.

Preparing an API 6A inquiry now? Send JH Valve / Janhen Valve the completed data sheet, project specification, required PSL and edition, connection details, operating envelope, inspection and test plan, and document index for a requirement review and quotation discussion. Marking the fields you have not yet resolved is more useful than leaving them blank — it lets the technical questions be closed before an order is placed.

سوالات متداول

Is PSL 3 always better than PSL 2?

PSL 3 applies more extensive requirements in relevant areas, but “better” depends on the project specification and service risk. Buyers should specify the level required by the governing documents rather than upgrading or substituting it without technical and commercial review.

What is the main difference between PSL 3 and PSL 3G?

PSL 3G is based on PSL 3 with additional gas-testing requirements. The RFQ should define the applicable API 6A edition, test procedure, medium, acceptance criteria, records, and purchaser witnessing requirements.

Does an API 6A PSL define the valve pressure rating?

No. PSL defines a product specification level, while rated working pressure is a separate selection parameter. Temperature class, material class, product type, size, connections, and other requirements must also be stated.

Is PSL the same as a performance requirement level?

No. Product specification level and performance requirement level address different aspects of API 6A equipment. If a performance requirement level applies, buyers should specify it separately and verify the required validation evidence.

What documents should be requested for PSL 3G equipment?

The exact package depends on the product, edition, and purchase specification, but buyers commonly define material and traceability records, NDE reports, pressure and gas-test records, approved drawings, inspection releases, and an agreed manufacturing record book index.

Final Thoughts on Selecting the Correct PSL

Treat the required PSL as one field in a complete API 6A equipment specification, not as shorthand for quality. Confirm the governing edition, product type, pressure and temperature ratings, material class, service fluid, connections, actuation, NDE scope, performance requirements, and the document index before comparing offers. Where PSL 3G applies, make the gas-test procedure and acceptance basis explicit so every bidder prices and documents the same scope.
